April 2015 Nepal earthquake

25 April 2015

The Gorkha earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck central Nepal, with its epicentre in the Gorkha district north-west of Kathmandu, in a region where the Indian plate pushes beneath the Eurasian plate. Nearly 9,000 people were killed and many more injured, and hundreds of thousands of houses were destroyed or damaged. Historic temples and palaces in the Kathmandu Valley, including parts of the Durbar squares and the Dharahara tower, collapsed. An avalanche triggered by the quake killed climbers at Mount Everest Base Camp. A major aftershock followed in May, and Nepal faced a long and difficult reconstruction.
