Establishment of Darién National Park

1980

Darién National Park in eastern Panama is the largest protected area in the country, and it lies along the border with Colombia. It covers part of the Darién Gap, a wide stretch of dense rainforest, swamp and mountains where the Pan-American Highway breaks off. The park shelters lowland and cloud forests rich in wildlife, such as harpy eagles, jaguars, tapirs and many rare birds, along with the Emberá and Wounaan peoples and other communities. It was created in 1980 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve in the early 1980s. Illegal logging, farming and, more recently, migrants crossing on foot have put the area under pressure.
