Establishment of Jaú National Park

1980

Jau National Park is a large protected area of Amazon rainforest in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, centred on the Jau River, a tributary of the Rio Negro. It is one of the largest national parks in South America, and it protects a wide range of habitats, including flooded forest, sandbanks and lakes along the dark, tea-coloured river waters. The park is home to jaguars, giant otters, manatees, river dolphins, black caimans and a great many species of fish and birds. Access is limited, and the area remains largely untouched by human development. It forms part of the Central Amazon Conservation Complex, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
