2025 Myanmar earthquake

28 March 2025

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck central Myanmar, with its epicentre near Mandalay along the Sagaing Fault, a major strike-slip fault running north to south through the country. The shallow quake caused severe damage in Mandalay, Sagaing and the capital Naypyidaw, collapsing buildings, bridges and ancient monuments, and killed thousands of people. Shaking was felt as far away as Thailand, where a tower under construction collapsed in Bangkok. Relief efforts were hampered by the civil war in Myanmar and by damaged roads and communications, and aftershocks continued for weeks. International aid was sent, though access in conflict areas was limited.
