Ujung Kulon National Park occupies the southwestern tip of the island of Java, in Indonesia, and the nearby islands. It is best known as the last refuge of the Javan rhinoceros, one of the rarest large mammals in the world, which survives in this area in very small numbers. The park also protects lowland rainforest, mangroves and coral reefs, and it is home to banteng, leopards, gibbons and many birds. The area was partly devastated by the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, and the tsunami left it largely uninhabited, which later helped wildlife to recover. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1991.
