Establishment of Channel Islands National Park

1980

Channel Islands National Park protects five of the eight Channel Islands off the coast of southern California, as well as the ocean around them: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara. The islands were isolated from the mainland for a long time, and they have many species that live nowhere else, such as the island fox. They were home to the Chumash and their ancestors for thousands of years, and later to ranches. Congress made the islands a national park in 1980, after they were first a national monument. The surrounding waters shelter kelp forests, seals and sea lions and nesting seabirds, and are a national marine sanctuary.
