The 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes were two powerful earthquakes that struck on 6 February 2023, within hours of one another, in southern Turkey near the border with Syria. The first, of magnitude 7.8, occurred in the early morning near Gaziantep, and the second, of magnitude 7.5, followed in the early afternoon farther north. Strong shaking and aftershocks devastated large areas, including the cities of Kahramanmaras, Hatay and Antakya, and parts of northwestern Syria. Tens of thousands of people died and many more were left homeless in freezing weather, and thousands of buildings collapsed. Poor construction and weak enforcement of building codes were widely blamed for the scale of the destruction, and the disaster led to a large international rescue and relief effort.
