Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania, and is famous for its elephants and for its views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which rises above the plain just across the border. The park has swamps fed by meltwater from the mountain, surrounded by dry plains and a seasonal lake bed, which attract elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, lions and large numbers of birds. It had previously been a game reserve, and the national park was established as the Maasai people, who graze their animals in the wider ecosystem, agreed to arrangements to share the land with wildlife. The elephants have been studied for many decades by Cynthia Moss, whose work has given great insight into elephant family life.
