Establishment of Salonga National Park

1970

Salonga National Park is a protected area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the largest tropical rainforest reserve in Africa. It lies in the Congo Basin and was established in 1970, and it is made up of two sections that are separated by an area of land inhabited by people. The park is home to species found nowhere else, including the bonobo, the Congo peafowl and the forest elephant. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been on the list of sites in danger since 1999, because of poaching, the bushmeat trade and the effects of years of conflict in the region. Its size and remoteness make it hard to protect.
