Construction of Estádio Nacional de Brasília

1974

The Estadio Nacional de Brasilia Mane Garrincha is the national stadium of Brazil's capital, named after the footballer Garrincha, one of the great wingers of Brazilian football. The original stadium was built in the 1970s, and it was torn down and rebuilt on a much larger scale for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup. At the 2014 World Cup it hosted seven matches, including the third-place play-off. It was later used for football matches at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The stadium is one of the largest in Brazil, and its high cost and the small size of Brasilia's football market raised questions about its use afterwards.
