Establishment of Gunung Mulu National Park

1974

Gunung Mulu National Park is a protected area in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, covering rainforest, limestone mountains and one of the most extensive cave systems in the world. It contains the Sarawak Chamber, one of the largest known cave chambers by area, and Deer Cave, a huge passage where millions of bats emerge at dusk in dramatic spirals. Above ground, sharp limestone formations called the Pinnacles rise from the mountainside on Gunung Api, and the sandstone peak of Gunung Mulu rises to more than two thousand metres. The park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its geological and biological value.
