Creation of SQL

1974

SQL, originally called SEQUEL, is a language for managing data held in relational databases. It was developed at IBM by Donald Chamberlin and Raymond Boyce, based on the relational model proposed in 1970 by the mathematician Edgar Codd. It let users retrieve, insert, update and delete data with English-like statements, instead of writing procedures for navigating records. Oracle released the first commercial implementation in the late 1970s, and SQL became an ANSI standard in 1986 and an ISO standard the following year. It remains the main language for databases in business and web applications.
