Origins of Raelism

1974

Raelism is a new religious movement founded by the French former journalist and singer Claude Vorilhon, who took the name Rael. He said that he was contacted by an extraterrestrial being who revealed that humanity was created in laboratories by a race of scientists called the Elohim, which he identified with the beings described in the Book of Genesis. The Raelian Movement holds that religion should be replaced by scientific understanding, supports human cloning and sexual freedom, and hopes to build an embassy for the Elohim. It gained wide attention in 2002 when a company linked to it, Clonaid, claimed to have produced a cloned baby, a claim that was never substantiated.
