Establishment of Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park

2001

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park lies in Quang Binh province in central Vietnam, near the border with Laos. It protects one of the largest and oldest karst regions in Asia, a landscape of limestone mountains riddled with hundreds of caves, underground rivers and forests. The most famous cave is Son Doong, discovered by a local man in the early 1990s and explored by British cavers in 2009, and which is among the largest cave passages in the world. The area was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its geology. The park is also home to rare species such as the Saola and the Hatinh langur, and it has become an important destination for ecotourism.
