Dirty War

from 1974 to 1989

The Dirty War was a period of state terrorism in Argentina during which the armed forces and security services, with the support of right-wing paramilitary groups, persecuted people they considered subversives. After the military seized power, the junta set up secret detention centres, and tens of thousands of people were kidnapped, tortured and killed or disappeared. Human rights groups estimate that around 30,000 people disappeared, while official investigations documented a smaller verified number. The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo began to protest publicly for their missing children. The regime lost credibility after its defeat in the Falklands War, and civilian rule returned. In 1985 several junta leaders were tried and convicted in the Trial of the Juntas.
