Invention of Sed

1974

Sed, short for stream editor, is a Unix command-line utility that filters and transforms text as it passes through, without needing the user to open it in an interactive editor. It was written by Lee McMahon at Bell Laboratories, and it grew out of the line editor ed and the search tool grep, using the same regular expressions for matching patterns. Its best-known function is substitution, as in replacing one word with another across a whole file or stream. Sed became one of the core tools of Unix and its descendants, including Linux, and it is still widely used in shell scripts for processing text and log files.
