Release of Urdu Wikipedia

27 January 2004

The Urdu-language edition of Wikipedia was launched at the beginning of 2004. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and one of the official languages of India, spoken by many millions of people, and it is written in a modified form of the Perso-Arabic script, in the Nastaliq style. Displaying the script correctly on computers and in web fonts posed difficulties in the first years, which made it harder for volunteers to write. The edition is written by volunteers in Pakistan, India and the diaspora, and it has grown into a large reference. Its size is still smaller than many other editions, in relation to the number of speakers.
