Discovery of HAT-P-1b

February 2007

HAT-P-1b is a gas giant planet orbiting a Sun-like star in the constellation Lacerta, roughly 450 light-years from Earth. It was discovered by the HATNet project, a network of small automated telescopes that looks for the slight dimming of a star as a planet passes in front of it. The planet is a hot Jupiter, orbiting very close to its star in about four and a half days. It is about half the mass of Jupiter but is larger in size, so its density is very low, making it one of the puffiest planets known at the time. The host star is part of a wide binary system, and the planet became a favoured target for studying exoplanet atmospheres.
