Construction of Burj Khalifa

4 January 2010

The Burj Khalifa is a skyscraper in Dubai, the tallest building in the world, rising to 828 metres. It was developed by the company Emaar Properties and designed by Adrian Smith of the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, with a Y-shaped plan and a tapering spire inspired by Islamic architecture and a desert flower. Construction began in 2004, and it was officially opened in January 2010. During construction it was known as Burj Dubai, but it was renamed in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, which had helped Dubai through a financial crisis. The tower contains offices, apartments, a hotel and observation decks, and has become an emblem of the city's rapid growth.
