Construction of CN Tower

26 June 1976

The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower in downtown Toronto, built by the Canadian National Railway company, from which it takes its name. Construction began in 1973, and the tower was completed and opened in June 1976. It was designed to solve a problem of television and radio signals being blocked by the city's growing skyline, and at about 553 metres it was the tallest free-standing structure in the world for more than three decades. The tower has an observation deck, a revolving restaurant and a glass floor, and became a symbol of Toronto and Canada. It is also used for events such as stair-climb fundraisers and is lit in colours on special occasions.
