Invention of make

April 1976

Make is a build automation tool created by Stuart Feldman at Bell Labs for the Unix operating system. It reads a file called a Makefile that lists targets, the files they depend on and the commands needed to build them, and it rebuilds only those files whose sources have changed, saving large amounts of time in software projects. Feldman wrote it after a colleague wasted time debugging a program that had not been recompiled properly. Make became one of the most widely used developer tools, and many versions and successors exist, including GNU Make. Feldman received the ACM Software System Award for it in 2003. One of its best-known quirks is that commands must be indented with a tab character.
