Entebbe raid

4 July 1976

The Entebbe raid was a hostage rescue carried out by Israeli commandos at Entebbe Airport in Uganda. An Air France plane from Tel Aviv to Paris had been hijacked in late June 1976 by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and two Germans, and diverted to Uganda, where the ruler Idi Amin allowed the hijackers to hold the passengers in the old terminal. The hijackers freed most non-Israeli passengers and threatened to kill the rest. In an operation known as Thunderbolt, Israeli aircraft flew more than 3,000 kilometers, landed at night and freed over a hundred hostages in about an hour. Three hostages and the commander, Yonatan Netanyahu, were killed.
