National Reorganization Process

from 24 March 1976 to 10 December 1983

The National Reorganization Process was the name the military junta gave to its dictatorship in Argentina, which began with the overthrow of President Isabel Peron. The armed forces ruled through a succession of juntas, headed by generals such as Jorge Videla, Roberto Viola and Leopoldo Galtieri. The regime carried out a campaign of repression against left-wing groups and anyone seen as an opponent, in which thousands of people were abducted, tortured and killed, many of them disappearing without trace. Its economic policies led to rising debt and unemployment. The defeat in the Falklands War in 1982 discredited the military, and democratic elections in 1983 brought Raul Alfonsin to power.
