The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium is the home ground of Real Madrid in the Chamartin district of Madrid. Work started in 1944, during the post-civil-war years, and the stadium was inaugurated in December 1947 as the Nuevo Estadio Chamartin. It was renamed in 1955 in honour of Santiago Bernabeu, the club's president who had driven the project and who led Real Madrid during its great run in the European Cup in the 1950s. The stadium has hosted the final of the 1964 European Championship, the 1982 World Cup final and several European Cup finals. It was substantially rebuilt in a project that ran from 2019 into the 2020s, which added a retractable roof and a modern exterior.
