Founding of International Maritime Organization

1948

The International Maritime Organization is the United Nations agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and for preventing pollution from ships. Its founding convention was adopted at a conference in Geneva in the late 1940s, but it did not enter into force until 1958, and the organization began work the following year with its headquarters in London. It was originally called the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization and received its current name in 1982. It sets global standards through conventions such as SOLAS, on the safety of life at sea, and MARPOL, on pollution from ships. Its member states carry out the regulations, since the organization has no power to enforce them itself.
