Nippon Professional Baseball is the top level of professional baseball in Japan, and the country's most popular spectator sport after football. Baseball was brought to Japan in the nineteenth century, and a professional league was founded in the 1930s. After the Second World War the competition was reorganized in a two-league system, with the Central League and the Pacific League, each with six teams, and the champions meet in the Japan Series. Famous teams include the Yomiuri Giants and the Hanshin Tigers. Japanese stars such as Sadaharu Oh, Ichiro Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani have made their names in the league, and some players have gone on to the American Major Leagues.
