Establishment of Everglades National Park

6 December 1947

Everglades National Park protects a large part of the Florida Everglades, a vast, slow-moving river of grass in the south of the state. It was dedicated by President Harry Truman in 1947, the year that Marjory Stoneman Douglas published her influential book The Everglades: River of Grass. It was the first national park created to protect a fragile ecosystem rather than scenic landscape. The park is home to wildlife such as the American alligator, the Florida panther and the manatee, and it is the only place where alligators and crocodiles live side by side. Drainage and canal building outside its borders have disrupted the flow of water, and a large restoration program was launched in 2000.
