The 1948 Palestine war was the first war of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It began as a civil war in British-ruled Palestine between Jewish and Arab communities after the United Nations voted to partition the territory into Jewish and Arab states. It became a wider war in May 1948, when Israel declared independence and the armies of neighbouring Arab states entered Palestine. By the armistice agreements of 1949 Israel controlled more territory than had been allotted to it under the partition plan, while Jordan took the West Bank and Egypt took the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were expelled, an event Palestinians call the Nakba, and the refugee question remains unresolved.
