Construction of Selhurst Park

August 1924

Selhurst Park is a football stadium in south London, in the London Borough of Croydon, designed by the Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, who also designed many of England's leading grounds. It was built for Crystal Palace, who moved there after leaving their earlier ground at the Crystal Palace site, and it opened with a match against Sheffield Wednesday. During the 1980s and 1990s it was also used by other teams, including Charlton Athletic and Wimbledon, which shared it for some years. The stadium has been expanded and modernized in stages, including a new main stand in the 2010s. It is known for the loud support of the Crystal Palace crowd, especially in the Holmesdale Road stand.
