Founding of FIDE

20 July 1924

FIDE, the Federation Internationale des Echecs, or World Chess Federation, was founded in Paris on 20 July 1924, during the Olympic Games held in that city. Its motto is Gens una sumus, Latin for We are one people. The federation links the national chess federations, sets the rules of the game, keeps the Elo-based rating lists and awards titles such as grandmaster. It began organising the Chess Olympiad in 1927 and took over the world championship in 1948, after the death of Alexander Alekhine left the title without a holder. The federation has often been at the centre of controversy, including disputes with Bobby Fischer in 1975 and with Garry Kasparov in the 1990s, who left to create a rival body.
