The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was the Soviet-ruled Ukrainian state, proclaimed in the course of the civil war that followed the Russian Revolution. Soviet power was established after fierce fighting against the Ukrainian People's Republic, the White armies and others. In 1922 it became one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union, and in 1945 it was given a separate seat as a founding member of the United Nations. Its history was marked by the Holodomor, the famine of the early 1930s, by the devastation of the Second World War and by the transfer of Crimea in 1954. In August 1991 its parliament declared independence, and the republic became modern Ukraine.
