The 2017 French presidential election was held in two rounds to choose the successor of Francois Hollande, who did not seek a second term. In the first round, Emmanuel Macron, a former economy minister who had founded the centrist movement En Marche! only a year earlier, and Marine Le Pen of the National Front qualified for the runoff. The candidates of the two parties that had dominated the Fifth Republic, the Republicans and the Socialists, were both eliminated, and Francois Fillon's campaign had been damaged by a scandal over paid jobs for his family. Macron won the second round in early May by a wide margin, about two thirds of the vote. At 39 he became the youngest president in French history.
