2017 Stockholm attack

7 April 2017

The 2017 Stockholm attack was a terrorist attack in the center of the Swedish capital, in which a stolen beer truck was driven down the pedestrian street Drottninggatan, and into the Åhléns department store. Five people were killed and many more were injured. The attacker, Rakhmat Akilov, an Uzbek citizen who had been refused asylum in Sweden, said that he had been motivated by the Islamic State, and fled the scene but was arrested later that day. He was convicted of terrorism and murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018. The attack led to calls for tighter security, and to a debate on migration and the deportation of rejected asylum seekers.
