2017 Catalonia attacks

17 August 2017

The 2017 Catalonia attacks were a pair of linked terrorist attacks by a jihadist cell in Spain in August 2017. In Barcelona a van was driven into pedestrians on Las Ramblas, one of the city's busiest tourist avenues, killing more than a dozen people, and hours later, in the seaside town of Cambrils, a car was driven into passers-by and the attackers were shot dead by police. The cell, mostly young men from the town of Ripoll, had been radicalised by an imam, Abdelbaki Es Satty, and had apparently intended a larger bombing, but the explosives they were preparing blew up in a house in Alcanar. The driver of the van, Younes Abouyaaqoub, was found and killed by police several days later. Islamic State claimed responsibility.
