Creation of Android Oreo

20 July 2017

Android Oreo, version 8.0 of Google's mobile operating system, was released to the public in the summer of 2017. It focused on performance and battery life, with limits on background activity of apps, and introduced notification channels that allowed users to control different types of notifications. Other features included picture-in-picture mode for video, autofill for passwords and forms, faster startup times and support for wide-gamut color. Under the hood, it introduced Project Treble, a modular architecture that made it easier and quicker for manufacturers to update phones to new Android versions. Like earlier versions, it was named after a dessert, this time the cookie, a first for a branded product.
