Introduction of Bitcoin Cash

1 August 2017

Bitcoin Cash was created as a fork of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, splitting off from the original chain to form a separate currency with the same transaction history up to that point. The split followed years of disagreement within the Bitcoin community over how to handle growing transaction volumes. Supporters of Bitcoin Cash wanted to raise the limit on block size so that more transactions could be processed, while the main Bitcoin community preferred other solutions such as Segregated Witness. Figures including Roger Ver and the mining company Bitmain backed the new currency. Holders of Bitcoin at the time of the fork received an equal amount of Bitcoin Cash, and the project itself later split again in 2018, creating Bitcoin SV.
