Solar eclipse of August 21, 2017

21 August 2017

The total solar eclipse of 21 August 2017 crossed the United States from Oregon to South Carolina, the first time a total eclipse had been visible from the continental United States coast to coast since 1918. The path of totality was roughly 100 kilometres wide, and millions of people travelled to be inside it, causing heavy traffic and crowded campsites in several states. The Moon's shadow passed over cities such as Salem, Casper, Nashville and Charleston, while the rest of North America saw a partial eclipse. Totality lasted a little over two minutes at best. The event was widely observed and photographed, and it increased public interest in the next American total eclipse, which occurs in 2024.
