Hurricane Irma

from 30 August 2017 to 15 September 2017

Hurricane Irma was an extremely powerful Atlantic hurricane that reached Category 5 intensity and maintained winds of about 185 miles per hour for a record length of time. It struck the northern Leeward Islands, devastating Barbuda, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands, before passing along the northern coast of Cuba and making landfall in the Florida Keys and then southwestern Florida. Millions of people in Florida were told to evacuate in one of the largest evacuations in the country's history. The storm killed well over a hundred people directly and indirectly and caused tens of billions of dollars in damage, making it one of the costliest hurricanes on record. It was part of a very active season that also included Harvey and Maria.
