2016 Berlin attack

19 December 2016

The 2016 Berlin attack was a terrorist attack in which a lorry was deliberately driven into a crowded Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz in the centre of Berlin. The attacker, Anis Amri, a Tunisian man whose asylum application had been rejected, had hijacked the truck and killed its Polish driver, Lukasz Urban, before driving into the market. Twelve people were killed in total, and dozens were injured. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility. Amri escaped and travelled across Europe, and he was shot dead by police in Milan a few days later. The attack led to debates in Germany about security failures and about deportation of rejected asylum seekers.
