A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Kirakira, Solomon Islands, on 8 December 2016. It was recorded by seismographs around the world; the US Geological Survey lists it among the largest earthquakes since 1900. A tsunami alert was issued after the shock. It took place on 8 December 2016.
