1 January 2017

The 2017 Istanbul nightclub attack was a mass shooting at the Reina nightclub, a popular venue on the Bosphorus in the Besiktas district of Istanbul, in the early hours of New Year's Day. A gunman opened fire on people who were celebrating the new year, killing 39 and wounding dozens of others. Most of the victims were foreign nationals from countries in the Middle East and elsewhere. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility. The attacker fled the scene, and was captured in Istanbul a couple of weeks later. The attack was one of several terrorist incidents that struck Turkey in 2016 and 2017, and it affected the country's tourism industry.
