The pro-Russian unrest of 2014 in Ukraine followed the Euromaidan protests and the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych in February. In the south and east of the country, pro-Russian demonstrators occupied government buildings in cities such as Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv, and in Crimea Russian troops without insignia took control of the peninsula before it was annexed by Russia in March. In April armed groups seized towns in the Donbas and proclaimed the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, and Ukraine began an anti-terrorist operation against them. In Odesa, clashes in early May ended in a fire at the Trade Unions House in which many people died. The unrest developed into the war in Donbas.
