Russian annexation of Crimea

from 20 February 2014 to 26 March 2014

In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, a peninsula on the Black Sea that was internationally recognised as part of Ukraine. It followed the fall of Ukraine's president, Viktor Yanukovych, after the Euromaidan protests. Armed men without insignia, later acknowledged to be Russian soldiers, took over the Crimean parliament and key sites, and a referendum, held under military control and not recognised internationally, produced a vote to join Russia. A treaty of accession was signed in Moscow, and Russia declared Crimea part of its territory. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution affirming Ukraine's territorial integrity. Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia, and the annexation was a precursor of the wider war in Ukraine.
