2014 Crimean status referendum

16 March 2014

The 2014 Crimean status referendum was held in Crimea, a peninsula in the Black Sea belonging to Ukraine, in the weeks after the fall of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and the arrival of Russian troops without insignia who took control of key sites. Voters were asked whether Crimea should join Russia or restore its 1992 constitution, with a vote to remain part of Ukraine under its current status not offered as an option. The authorities reported a vote of about 97 percent in favour of joining Russia on a very high turnout, but the referendum was held under military occupation and was declared invalid by Ukraine, most governments and the UN General Assembly. Russia formally annexed Crimea within days.
