2013 German federal election

22 September 2013

The 2013 German federal election was won by the Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, under Chancellor Angela Merkel, who gained about forty-one percent of the vote and came just short of an absolute majority of seats. The Free Democratic Party, her coalition partner, failed to reach the five percent threshold and lost all its seats in the Bundestag for the first time in its history. The new Alternative for Germany, founded earlier that year with a platform critical of the euro bailouts, narrowly missed entering parliament. After weeks of talks, Merkel formed a grand coalition with the Social Democrats, and began her third term as chancellor.
