Creation of Windows 8.1

17 October 2013

Windows 8.1 was an update to Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system, released in October 2013. Windows 8 had received a mixed reception because it replaced the traditional Start menu with a full-screen Start screen designed for touch devices, which many desktop users found confusing. The update responded to the criticism by bringing back a Start button, letting users boot straight to the desktop and improving the way the touch interface and the desktop worked together. It also added new apps, deeper integration with the OneDrive cloud service and various security improvements. Windows 8.1 was succeeded by Windows 10 in 2015, and support for it ended in January 2023.
