Revolution of Dignity

from November 2013 to February 2014

The Revolution of Dignity, also called Euromaidan, was a wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Ukraine that began when President Viktor Yanukovych suspended preparations to sign an association agreement with the European Union, in favour of closer ties with Russia. Protesters occupied Independence Square, the Maidan, in Kyiv, and the movement grew into a wider revolt against corruption and abuses of power. In February 2014 clashes between protesters and security forces left about a hundred protesters dead, remembered as the Heavenly Hundred, and Yanukovych fled the country. A new government was formed, and elections were held. Russia then annexed Crimea and backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, beginning a war that grew into the full-scale invasion of 2022.
