2008 United States presidential election

4 November 2008

The 2008 United States presidential election was won by the Democratic senator Barack Obama of Illinois, who defeated the Republican senator John McCain of Arizona. Obama became the first African American elected president and chose Joe Biden as his running mate, while McCain's running mate was Alaska governor Sarah Palin. The campaign took place against the background of the war in Iraq, unpopular with many voters, and the financial crisis that deepened in September. Obama won with a clear majority of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes, and Democrats strengthened their control of Congress.
