26/11 Mumbai attacks

26 November 2008

The 26/11 Mumbai attacks were a series of coordinated shootings and bombings carried out by ten gunmen, who arrived by sea from Pakistan and attacked several sites in the Indian city. Their targets included the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, the Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi Trident hotels, a popular cafe and a Jewish community centre. The attacks lasted for about three days, until Indian commandos regained control of the buildings. More than 160 people were killed, among them many foreign visitors. India blamed the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba, and the only gunman captured alive, Ajmal Kasab, was convicted and executed in 2012. The attacks badly strained relations between India and Pakistan.
