Founding of Google Play

22 October 2008

Google Play is the digital distribution service through which Android users download apps, games, music, books and films. It began as Android Market, which opened to users in the autumn of 2008 alongside the first Android phone, the HTC Dream, and was rebranded as Google Play in 2012 when Google merged several of its content stores under one name. Developers can publish apps to it for a one-off registration fee, and it became one of the two dominant mobile app stores together with Apple's App Store. It also acts as the main channel through which Android devices receive updates to their apps and services.
